Maestro Impro™ is a Keith Johnstone format licensed by the International Theatresports Institute. Impro Melbourne is the only company in Victoria that has permission to use the format.
Maestro Impro™ is often described as a Survivor-style impro competition; in reality, Maestro minimises competition because all the players in a scene get the same score. Directors set the scenes and, if necessary, direct the players during the scenes. The directors craft a show with variety by offering scenes seeking different emotional experiences in addition to comedy. They can give further arc to the show by contrasting games with free scenes, group/pair scenes with solo work, as well as guiding speed/rhythm, language/physical changes, etc.
Maestro is challenging for the players as they do not know who they will play with or what they will be asked to do. It also helps players learn and understand the overall shape of a show to see how each individual scene influneces and impacts the whole performance. Plus it teaches how an audience perceives a show and what they actually want to see.
Prerequisites: Impro Melbourne's Spontaneity, Narrative Technique, Character and Scene Work courses, or similar training at the discretion of the Artistic Director or course instructor.
