Impro Melbourne Update (Apr. 2013)

by Kevin Yank on 11 April, 2013 in Newsletter

Greetings, Earthlings! Welcome to this mid-Comedy Festival edition of the Impro Melbourne Update. Your guest host today is Dr. Gaviun Schuster, who recently discovered a scientific link between improvisation and good health. “It’s great stuff!” Schuster says.

We have heaps and heaps of shows in the festival this year, plus a host of other shows from IM members. Ch-ch-check it out!

The Big Three!

Impro Melbourne has three stellar shows in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year: Late Night Theatresports™, Celebrity Theatresports™ and The Fairytale Cookbook.

The Fairytale Cookbook is our first ever public kids show, and boy is it popular! The first show sold out, and since then we've been entertaining families or all ages with improvised tales of imagination and comedy. To find out more info or to book tickets, just click here.

For only three more shows, Late Night Theatresports™ will be thrilling crowds at the Town Hall each night from 11pm. Performing to full houses last week, the show earned 3.5 Stars from the Herald Sun, who said it was “the perfect way to wrap up a big night of shows.” To find out more info or to book tickets, just click here.

Finally, we have the grandaddy of all Comedy Festival shows, Celebrity Theatresports™. One of the longest-running shows in the festival, each year sees the stage at The National Theatre, in St Kilda, fill with household faces from stage and screen, all vying for the coveted Theatresports™ trophy. As the Herald Sun said, it’s “packed with laughs, outrageously funny moments and astonishing creativity.” You can find more info about this year’s show and book tickets here.

For your chance to win* one of four double-passes to see Celebrity Theatresports™ on Saturday 20 April, just LIKE the Impro Melbourne Facebook Page and email us here with the answer to this question: Who is your favourite celebrity playing in this year’s Celebrity Theatresports™?

*Winners notified by 17th April.

You Want More?

You’re in luck! There are heaps of other improvised shows in the festival this year. Impro Melbourne’s own Jenny Lovell and Anna Renzenbrink present the timeless classic, In The Parlour with Tilly and Flora. Take a trip back to the 19th Century for a performance filled with charm, wit and delightfully casual misunderstandings. For more info or to book tickets, click here.

Next up, Vic Healy takes you on a journey into the human body with Victoria Healy’s Anatomy. You’ll laugh as much as cringe as Vic literally explores the ins and outs of our anatomy. For more info or to book tickets, click here.

Two of Melbourne’s top Artistic Directors, Jason Geary and Jimmy James Eaton (the minds behind Impro Sketch), have teamed up to present Sketch-ual Healing. Hilarious, riddled with pathos and sometimes as awkward as a first kiss behind the shelter shed, this show is a feedbag of comedy, characters, and comedic characters. For more info or to book tickets, click here.

Our friends at The Big HOO-HAA! Melbourne have a special Comedy Festival edition of their regular show, called Hoo-Haa You? Joined by a special comedy guest each show, the crew spin tales of comedy gold from their guest’s stories and suggestions. For more info or to book tickets, click here.

Of course, no Comedy Festival is complete without the Chicago-style improvisation of The Improv Conspiracy. Their new show, Our Friend Harold, is a full hour of Harold improvisation, all drawn from one audience suggestion. For more info or to book tickets, click here.

Rama Nicholas presents her debut solo musical, Death Rides a Horse. An homage to Spaghetti Westerns and music theatre, this show follows the story of one woman as she discovers her destiny. For more info or to book tickets, click here.

That's all, folks!
