Personal and Performative

with Maja Dekleva Lapajne

In improvisation the performer is strongly personally involved and revealed to the audience to a
big extent. Once the performance starts there is no script to cling to and no outside direction to
hide behind, we improvise from who we are, what we know, what we are interested in, what we
have experienced in our lives, how we see the world, what we stand for, how we feel this very
moment about our co-performers, our audience and ourselves. It is for sure one of the
incredible beauties of theatre improvisation to be able to enjoy performers as people on stage
and not only as characters.
This workshop focuses on personal entries to performative content. It dives into the
transformation of personal material into meaningful stage creation that is personal though not
private. This can enable strong insights for both performers and audience members, their
intimate connections to the content, processing their own experience and life. Reprocessing
personal material in an artistic way creates space for vulnerability that empowers the
performers, the audience and the art piece itself.

Prerequisites: Completion of our core courses (SpontaneityNarrative TechniqueCharacter, Scene Work, and Formats and Styles) or equivalent improvisation and acting experience as determined by the Artistic Director.
