In the Writers’ Room

So, you want to write sketches for Television?  Great!  Now what?  What happens in the writers room?  Is it like 30 Rock?  

Albert Howell is a professional television writer with credits writing 5 seasons for Comedy Inc (CTV) 7 seasons for This Hour Has 22 Minutes (CBC) as well as Late Night (NBC) and The Tonight Show (NBC). Over this four hour workshop Albert will show participants exactly how a television writers’ room operates as well as script formats and what is wanted in a writers package. 

Everyone must bring a laptop and have 3 sketch ideas to pitch. One must be based on current events.

Albert began his career at the Loose Moose Theatre in Calgary where he trained with Keith Johnstone. In 1993 Howell joined the cast of The Second City and performed there until 1997, including a brief period in Chicago where he performed with Tina Fey. In 1997, he and Andrew Currie formed The Devil's Advocates, a comedy duo that found success after appearing on Speakers' Corner. They were offered the job of hosting Improv Heaven and Hell on The Comedy Network. Howell also appeared on Open Mike with Mike Bullard and The Conan O'Brien Show. Albert has written 5 seasons for Comedy Inc (CTV) 7 seasons for This Hour Has 22 Minutes (CBC) as well as Late Night (NBC) and The Tonight Show (NBC). He has been nominated for a Gemini Award and has won three Writers Guild of Canada awards and a Canadian Comedy Award.
