Monster of the Week

with Katherine Weaver

Do you love the Supernatural? Do Vampires, witches, the undead and evil entice you? If so, this is for you!

In Monster of the Week, students will play with the supernatural, and explore playing characters like vampires, demons and fairies. They’ll learn how to make these characters believable, and strive for authentic scenes instead of “gagging”. This scriptless theatrical journey will have you on the edge of your seat as the audience and the actors find out what monster they are fighting at exactly the same time. Will they need garlic, rock salt or an improvised devil trap? Only time will tell.

Students will examine basic structure of a supernatural TV show (Buffy, Grimm, Supernatural, X-Files, etc.) explore characters, and learn how to play support in the story. This workshop also deals with how to stop planning when playing a genre piece, to be present in the moment. We will use different exercises to get the supernatural into your blood, for example, a ‘corpse carousel’ and ‘zombies on speed’!

“Katherine quickly establishes an environment of trust which opens the doors to creative expression. Whether you're passionate about monsters, improvising, or just challenging yourself to disregard that inner critic in your head and act on impulse, Katherine will support and engage you in this workshop.” —Isabella Valette
