Melbourne Impro Festival Workshops – Book Now!

by Kevin Yank on 22 October, 2014 in Workshops, Festival

Alongside all of the shows in our three-day impro extravaganza November 7–9, Impro Melbourne will open its doors to offer two exciting workshops from our out-of-town guests!

Worlds of If – Christine Brooks (New Zealand)

Worlds that aren’t quite real but could be. Stories set on Earth and employing elements that already exist in some form.

Our own world in a future—not the future but a future.

This workshop explores how to build worlds strange and terrifying yet plausible and then play in them. Bring to the workshop your fears of what could happen to our world so that we can make those fears come true and then play with the results.

Bouffon Style Improvised Storytelling – Simone Tani (UK / Italy)

A Bouffon is an outcast. Banned from society for being considered ugly or wrong, a mistake of nature. Due to this condition the bouffon comes from the shade with the freedom to challenge what society regards as good or taboo. The bouffon has a special pleasure to parody the powerful and using charm to provoke the audience.

This workshop explores how to apply Bouffon style to improvised storytelling. Can we tell a story and suggest something else, more disturbing, with grotesque images we create?

During the workshop students will use physical comedy and clown techniques to develop the contact with the audience and build complicity with our fellow improvisers. You will create grotesque characters and play with “bad taste”, “below the belt”, “too far”, “insincere apologies” as tools to playfully provoke the audience.

Simone graduated at Ecole Phillip Gaulier in Paris where he studied theatre, clown and bouffon. He trained in Dark Clown in London with Mark Bell and Peta Lily and Commedia dell’arte with Carlo Boso in Italy. His improvisation training includes working with Keith Johnstone as well as Dennis Cahill at the Loose Moose Theatre and at Second City in Chicago.
